First Day of School

This year, Elise and Nathan are both at the international school, Nathan in "Early Years 2" and Elise in Grade 4. Nathan was so excited to be going to the big school, and he and Elise even ride the bus together!

It has been a great first couple of months - I am continually impressed with the quality of the school. Of course, it is a private school, which means that they have a lot of resources to meet the learning objectives for the kids. For example, when Nathan's class gave a presentation in the weekly school assembly, the teacher sent home with each child a DVD of the performance so the parents could see it.

Nathan has already been on a couple of field trips, one to the pet store to choose the pet fish for their classroom, and another to the pumpkin farm just last week. They have lots of little buses that hold 24 people, so they can always go on a field trip. Nathan's class even rides the bus a few blocks away to the community gymnasium for certain PE activities.

And, last month when Elise was studying "Ancient Civilizations", she went on 3 field trips, one per week, to a place called Augusta Raurica, where they saw how the Romans lived by grinding the wheat and making their own bread, making mosaics, and visiting the museum. Just a couple of weeks ago, for their unit on "Materials", they went to the glass factory in Hergiswil.

And, of course, there are specialized teachers for everything. Nathan and Elise both have Drama, Dance, Music, PE, Pottery, IT, Cooking, etc. And, of course, Elise has German as well. Elise also participates in clubs and teams at school including Film Editing, Choir, Band, Soccer and Swim team. We're really spoiled to be at such a great school!
