Happy Birthday, Will!

Now that's one happy boy!
William's birthday was August 15th, and he had weeks of celebrations!  For his birthday celebration on Saturday, August 13th, he chose to go to the ropes course at Atzmännig.  As you can see, he had a great time!  We also found some of the other activities there, including the Rodelbahn (Alpine slide) and another slide that is basically a 90 degree drop (you slide down on a burlap sack).  Will and I did it together, and you definitely lose your stomach!

We then went to a Mexican restaurant for his birthday dinner (a real treat, as Mexican is not so common in der Schweiz!).
Will opened his presents from the family and we had a great homemade berry cake on the 15th, his actual birthday.
Once school started, he celebrated again - he asked to bring smoothies and fruit for the treat for his class.
Then we had a "Cars" birthday party with friends from school and a couple of friends from church on Saturday, August 27th.  What a lucky kids to get so many celebrations!

German Camp for Nate and Will

Nathan and William spent the last week of July at a German Camp (I called it "Brother's Camp" to get them excited about it - since it was just the two of them and two other boys from their school who are also brothers).  They did lots of fun activities around Zurich, like visiting Technorama, going to an island and cooking Wurst, going to the zoo, etc. (they all said that Technorama - a giant science museum - was their favorite!).  They practiced a lot of German and had fun.  The teacher said William was the best German speaker (he spent the longest at the bilingual preschool), but they both did great!  They really are doing well with German.

Atzmännig Outdoor Fun!

Atzmännig is a very small ski resort about 40 minutes from our house.  We've been there skiing once, but we didn't know how much fun it could be in the summer!  Dave and I went there one day with Elise and Karen (while she was here in July), while the boys were at their German camp and Meredith went to a babysitter.

First we went on the Rodelbahn (Alpine slide), which is so much fun, and something you have to try in Switzerland.  Then we went to the ropes course and did some climbing and lots of zip-lining!  What a fun activity so close to home!

Colmar, France

Just under 2 hours drive from where we live is the Alsace region of France - an absolutely beautiful area!  We visited the town of Colmar the last weekend of July, along with the nearby "Monkey Mountain" attraction.

Monkey Mountain is a monkey sanctuary where visitors walk through and the monkeys are free to move about as they please.  We were all given a handful of popcorn when we entered, and the monkeys ate from our hands!  It was really amazing to see all the monkeys up close, and just a very nice experience.
We then went to the town of Colmar, one of the major towns of the Alsace region and one of Europe's most beautiful cities.  This area went back and forth between France and Germany throughout history, as they fought for control of more land.  Because the language kept changing, they even painted the houses certain colors based on who lived there (the baker, tanner, butcher, priest, etc.) since it didn't make sense to write the name - they just knew that blue meant priest, etc.  A highlight at lunch was trying escargot ...snails (some of us liked it more than others)!
Colmar is also the birthplace of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor who designed the Statue of Liberty.  We visited the Bartholdi museum and saw some of the designs and drawings, as well as some of the artist's other works.  The actual name of the statue is "Liberty Enlightening the World", but it has become known as simply the Statue of Liberty.
We took a boat ride through the canals of the town (a bit like Venice) and finished the evening with dinner at a crepe restaurant!  We're are always amazed at how many beautiful and interesting places are so close by!  Once again, we consider ourselves very lucky to have the opportunity to live in Switzerland.
